Region 19 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) announced last week that it found merit to the Washington State NewsGuild’s charge that the McClatchy Company illegally withheld long overdue raises to recently unionized journalists.

The Washington State NewsGuild has been voluntarily recognized by management.
The Washington State NewsGuild heard today that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled in our favor that we have won the right to be one union across all four newsrooms: The News Tribune in Tacoma, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald, and the Tri-City Herald.
Despite the crisis of the ongoing pandemic, McClatchy has announced its intent to withhold raises from Washington journalists, claiming our ongoing union drive prevents the company from providing this money. They alone are choosing not to give us these raises.

WASHINGTON STATE - It has been three weeks since journalists at The News Tribune in Tacoma, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald, and the Tri-City Herald announced they are unionizing.

McClatchy has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) suggesting that our union should be four separate entities, rather than the joint unit we have proposed. We disagree. The Washington State NewsGuild will best serve our communities as one union committed to local journalism.

Nearly 90 percent of eligible reporters, visual journalists and digital staff at the newspapers, all owned by the McClatchy Company, have signed cards authorizing representation by The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild of The NewsGuild-CWA.
